3 Ground Rules About getting, and staying, toned

It’s that time of the year again and we are getting ready for fun in the sun, grill outs, and weddings. With all that, on top of our daily lives, it can be hard to keep our health and fitness goal as a top priority. To keep yourself in shape and feeling your best this summer, remember there three ground rules on being and staying tones and energized.

1.) You are what you eat. Literally. Every feel like you just want to take a nap after you have had a big and fatty meal? That’s because your body is using up all of its energy to digest the meal, then needing more energy to do your daily activities. You can do crunches and core exercises from sun up to sun down, 365 days a year and still not have the stomach of your dreams. This is because our bodies need lean meats and fresh produce versus the artificial foods and bi-products we keep feeding ourselves. This is one of the most important principles to getting muscle tone. The lower your body fat percentage is, the more defined and toned you will appear. When eating out, opt for fresh salads with ALL dressing on the side, as well as fresh, broiled, or steamed veggies/fish/other options.

2.) How you work out. Working out is obviously key to loosing fat and gaining muscle tone. HIIT, or high intensity interval training, is one of the most effective ways of getting in a workout.  Be sure to switch up your workouts. An ideal workout schedule would be the following: Two days of strength training, two days of cardio/HIIT, and one day of yoga/stretching. This way your body isn’t stuck on the same routine and you are switching it up while still being able to take two rest days per week. To make your workouts more effective, add in squats or lunges with your upper body workouts. Lower body workouts burn the most calories, so when you add in a squat with a shoulder press or a lunge with a bicep curl, you are getting more benefits in a shorter amount of time.

3.) Drink it up! Yes drink half your body weight! In water… that is. Drinking half your body weight in water will help to clear your skin, boot metabolism, energize you, and naturally detox your body. Not to mention, drinking half your body weight in ounces of water per day will help to hydrate your body and give you the healthy glow you’ve been looking for! Give it two days and we promise you will feel more hydrated, healthier, energized, and happier.

    I added 2 more rules this summer and hopefully for long after:
    1) No carbs or caffeine after noon.
    2) Foam rolling in addition to stretching after every workout.
