Do you find yourself excited about your New Year’s resolutions, only to give up on them by the end of January? Here are four tips to help you stick to your resolutions.
1: Take it one day at a time.
Remember, change takes time. There will be days when it’s easy to stick to your goals and days when it seems impossible. But it’s okay to make mistakes along the way. The most important thing is that you try every day. Be proud of yourself on the days when things work, and regroup for a new day when it doesn’t.
It might also be a good idea to evaluate and remind yourself of your motivation behind your resolutions. Why did you choose them, and what is your ultimate goal? For me, knowing why helps drive me throughout the year with my resolutions.
2: Be realistic about your expectations.
While it’s great to set resolutions and goals, be mindful of the goals you set and the time frame you give yourself. For example, learning how to do a freestanding handstand (one of my fitness goals this year) may take several months if not the whole year to master. Giving yourself a realistic time frame will eliminate unnecessary pressure.
3: Document your progress.
One surefire way to stay on track with your resolutions is to document your progress. It can be as simple as keeping a journal, using a calendar to set weekly or monthly goals, or taking pictures or videos. Or, if you want more accountability, start a blog to keep track of your progress. Not only will you be able to track your progress, your journey might motivate someone else.
4: Celebrate your successes!
Every milestone is important, so don’t forget to celebrate along the way. Create a reward system for each step in your journey. Maybe it’s treating yourself to a manicure or buying a new book. Working towards a reward is another way to keep you inspired. Just be sure your celebration doesn’t interfere with your resolution.
Resolutions are a great way to make improvements in your life. Remember that there will be successes and failures along the way and that’s okay. Having a positive attitude and a game plan will help you succeed.
