While reading any popular Health and Fitness magazine, you will see that the “magic” number of calories to eat each day is 1200, in order to loose weight, get a bikini body, etc. However, after finding much research on the topic, you should never let your body go under the your BMR. According to My Fitness Pal, “your BMR is an estimate of how many calories you’d burn if you were to do nothing but rest for 24 hours. It represents the minimum amount of energy needed to keep your body functioning, including breathing and keeping your heart beating. Your BMR does not include the calories you burn from normal daily activities or exercise”.
For example, if you were 5’7″ female weighing 135lbs and 21 years old, you need at LEAST 1,458 calories per day to compensate for what you would burn if you laid in bed all day. Take into account that you typically do not stay in bed 24/7. You are walking around, doing work, exercising, etc. Your body cannot survive on 1200 calories per day, without seeing side effects.
